Annual Rotary Singing and Dancing Competition 2017: Saturday 4th November 2017

THEME:       “Empower Youth, Secure Our Future”

 

1.0      What?

The Annual Rotary Singing and Dancing Competition is a signature Rotary activity. It aims at raising funds for deserving causes of participating Rotary and Rotaract Clubs. The competition is now in its 7th year and keeps on growing from strength to strength!

 

2.0      The Cause?

Rotary intends to establish a youth training and entrepreneurship centre in memory of the late Mary Howard – an employee of Rotary International who had a passion for supporting humanitarian causes worldwide. She was a true friend and partner of D9211. The centre will facilitate practical skills training and entrepreneurship development. It is a major 2 million dollar project envisioned to be completed over a 5 year period.

 

We choose to be part of this transformation because we are Rotarians and we care; because we know that every little helps and together we can make a difference; because we can reach out to a child/youth and be the parents, the brothers, the sisters they need and deserve.  We can transform the lives of the most disadvantaged in society through music and dance.

 

3.0      How?

We sing, we dance, we raise funds, we formulate and implement projects always ‘Empowering Communities, Changing Lives’. We nurture self-reliance.  We light up youthful lives.

4.0      The 2017 Singing and Dancing Competition Performances

 

4.1      Competition Items

Each competing Club must present two (2) competition items.

 

  1. Rotaract Clubs
  2. Dance entry: “Bollywood Style” – Indian dance routine in the flamboyant and colourful style of Indian ‘Bollywood’ movies.
  3. Song entry: ‘Christmas comes early’ – Christmas carol in English either a cappella or accompanied by live instruments (e.g. keyboard, guitar, flute, saxophone etc).
  • No pre-recorded vocals are allowed as we want to hear and assess the voices of the performers. Miming is strictly prohibited.
  • A song entry may be accompanied by some dancing for dramatic effect but any such dance shall not be assessed for marks.

 

  1. Rotary Clubs
  2. Dance entry: “South African Mama Divas”. Creative dance set to music by any South African female solo artiste (e.g Amor Vittone, Brenda Fassie, Karen Zoid, Lira, Miriam Makeba, Nadine, PJ Powers, Rebecca Malope, Thandiswa Mazwai, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Zonke etc).

 

  1. Song entry: ‘Love is in the Air’ – A love song in any language and from any part of the world either a cappella or accompanied by live instruments (e.g. keyboard, guitar, flute, saxophone, traditional instrument etc).
  • No pre-recorded vocals are allowed as we want to hear and assess the voices of the performers. Miming is strictly prohibited.
  • A song entry may be accompanied by some dancing for dramatic effect but any such dance shall not be assessed for marks.

4.2      Competition theme

The competition theme is ‘Empower Youth, Secure Our Future’. Extra marks will be awarded for a performance addressing the theme.

5.0      Club Entry and Competition Guide

  •      The competition is open to all Rotary Clubs and Rotaract Clubs in District 9211 (including provisional Rotary Clubs and provisional Rotaract Clubs).
  •      Registration fee for Rotary Clubs will be 100,000/= and Rotaract Clubs 50,000/=.
  •      A Rotary club may enter the competition jointly with a Rotaract Club.  The entry fee for such joint entry will be 100,000/=.
  • Where a Rotary Club makes a joint entry with a Rotaract Club, the Rotaractors shall constitute not more than 40% of the performers.
  •      The applicable competition items for a joint Rotary/Rotaract entry shall be the items for Rotary Clubs. For avoidance of doubt a joint Rotary/Rotaract entry shall not perform Rotaract competition entry items.
  • Direct family members of Rotarians or Rotaractors (specifically spouses, and children aged 10 years and over) in a competing club may be included among the performers (provided they do not constitute more than 20% of the performance team for any item). Inclusion of individuals outside these categories and limits will lead to automatic disqualification of the competing team.
  •      Please note:
  1. All participating Clubs shall be required to fill a registration form to be submitted with the registration fee before the expiry of the registration deadline. Forms should be submitted to Rtn. Daniel Ruhweza.
  2. The Registration form must be filled in adherence to the 4 way test to ensure that teams are compliant with the competition rules. Any Club that fills the registration form dishonestly shall be liable to disqualification.
  • Registration shall include a list of participants and their designations.
  1. Registration deadline is Monday 14th October 2017. Cheques to be in names of ‘Rotary Club of Kampala North’. Late registration is prohibited.
  2. Due to programme limitations the competition organizers may restrict the number of participating Clubs and may close registration before the deadline if the available slots are filled. Slots will be filled on a first come first served basis so early registration is encouraged.

 

  • Prohibition of duplication of songs for the singing entry:
  1. Duplication of song entries is prohibited. Every Club shall perform a different, distinct song entry.
  2. To avoid duplication Clubs are required to submit a Reservation of Song form at the earliest possible opportunity. Songs shall be reserved on a first come first served basis. Where a song has already been reserved by another Club, the applying Club will have to select another song entry.
    • Strict time keeping is of the essence. The maximum duration for any item shall be 4 minutes. If time is exceeded the following penalties shall apply:
  1. Exceeding time by up to 2 minutes 10% deduction from final score.
  2. Exceeding time by over 2 minutes the performance will be stopped and incur a 20% deduction from the final score.
    • Sound tracks needed by a club for their dance performances must be submitted to the Chair Music & Compilations Rtn. Fred Mubiru (PP) for verification of compliance with these rules and testing by Monday 14th October 2017. Reservation of song forms should also be submitted to Rtn. Fred Mubiru (PP).

6.0      Judges and Adjudication

6.1       Adjudication of the competition shall be conducted by a panel consisting of not less than three and not more than five judges.

6.2       Judges shall be persons with a passion for dance and music, knowledgeable in technical aspects of dance and music. They may be musicians and/or teachers of music but need not be professionals. Judges shall be non Rotarians/Rotaractors.

6.3       Detailed rules and adjudication criteria consistent with these rules shall be formulated by the Judges and availed to all registered competing Clubs at least 30 days before the competition. These shall provide further clarity.

6.4       The decision of the judges shall be final and not subject to any appeal.

 

7.0      Scoring and Prizes

7.1       Clubs will be scored in each competition item using the following criteria:

  1. Quality of the performance
  2. Creativity of the attire
  • Alignment with the theme ‘Empower Youth, Secure Our Future’
  1. Having ten (10) or more participants in each competition item
  2. Any other criteria determined by the Judges prior to the competition.

7.2       Clubs will be informed of distribution of points at least thirty (30) days before the competition.

7.3       Certificates of recognition will be given to all participating Clubs and winners.

7.4       Cash prizes are to be used for Club projects that are aligned with the theme of the competition. Where a Club does not have any project aligned to the theme, the prize money shall be donated to the Rotary Vijana Poa Project.

7.5       The host Rotary Club of Kampala North may participate in the event and be acknowledged as a participating Club but is ineligible for award of any prize.

8.0      Be part of the Audience

 

The fun filled daylong family event running from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday 4th November 2017 will cost each member of the audience only 20,000/=.  We do not practice age discrimination and every member of the audience shall pay the same fee. The venue for the event will be communicated shortly.
